Bird-watching at Clarissa Falls

There are about 540 species of birds that call Belize home, both migratory or year-round. Many of these different species can be spotted around La Clarissa Ranch in their natural habitat. Good eyes help; binoculars & cameras are greats assets.

At early sunrise & in the middle of the day you will be amused as you see egrets take slow rides on or wander in the shade of the grazing cattle. Flocks of colourful parrots take over our skies and eventually descend noisily but harmoniously on the cornfields nearby. Elegant motmots gently land & rest peacefully atop the trees.

See the Roadside Hawk and the Orange-breasted Falcon perched high as each patiently await their prey. The common Brown Jays, known to many as the "warning birds of jungle," point out the danger of the raptors and more to all around them. Listen for the distinctive croaking sound of none other than the Keel-billed Toucan, the national bird of Belize. Easily spot the splash of colour they make among the tree branches as it perches high above for a short rest or in search of fruit.

Stop & smell the flowers along with tiny hummingbirds as they sample the sweet nectars. Flocks of egrets glide along the river and clouds of parrots take to the skies, heading to their evening roost. Sunset comes, the moment of darkness engulfing the earth as you excitedly await what the night has to offer.

Last but not least, our very own half-bred Oscellated Turkeys, domestic turkeys, parrots and other feathered friends will complete your birding experience.

A tip for birders: Although birding is an excellent year-round activity, visiting Belize is highly recommended during the mating & nesting season, generally from March to the early rainy season in July.
